Chapter 29: Magnetic Force and Field

Study Plan

We will see in this chapter that a current exerts a magnetic force on other moving charges or currents, such as the microscopic currents in the iron particles; and we will describe this force in terms of the magnetic field produced by the current.

For a current in a straight wire, we will consider such questions as:

  • What is the force on a moving charge near a long wire? (Section 29.1, page 928; and Example 1, page 930)
  • What is the direction of the magnetic field near the wire? (Section 29.2, page 936; and Example 4, page 940)
  • How does the magnetic field outside the wire vary with distance? (Section 29.2, page 939; and Example 4, page 940)? The magnetic field inside the wire? (Example 5, page 940)
  • What is the total magnetic field due to two wires? (Example 3, page 938)
  • What is the magnetic field near a short, straight wire? (Section 29.5, page 949)

Organize

  1. Prepare for lecture by reading the assigned sections from Chapter 29 in your textbook or ebook. This will provide an organizing framework for concepts introduced in lecture, and help you take better notes.
  2. Take the checkup quiz and work the Checkup questions in your textbook to assess your understanding of basic concepts. Take note of any topics you need to review further.
  3. Review the Examples from your textbook. These progress from simple to complex, and provide concrete illustrations of the concepts discussed.
  4. Review the Problem Solving Techniques box on Direction of Magnetic Force (right-hand rule) (page 936) and on Ampère’s Law for Current Distributions with Symmetry (page 947) from your textbook.

Learn

  1. Re-read Chapter 29 and review your lecture notes.
  2. Use the FlashCards to test your memory for new key terms and equations.
  3. Work the end of chapter Problems and Review Problems assigned by your instructor. If your instructor has assigned SmartWork online homework, login from the right navigation pane.
