Chapter 10: Systems of Particles

Study Plan

The concepts introduced in Chapter 10 permit us to examine in detail several aspects of the motion of the jumper:

  • The body of the jumper is a system of particles. Where is the average position of the mass of this system of particles when the body is in a straight configuration? How does this change when the jumper reconfigures his extremities? (Example 8, part (a), page 322)
  • What is the gravitational potential energy of a system of particles, and how much does the jumper reduce his potential energy by bending his body? (Page 321 in Section 10.2 and Example 8, part (b), page 322)
  • What is equation of motion of a system of particles, and to what extent does the translational motion of a jumper resemble projectile motion? (Page 324 in Section 10.3)

Organize

  1. Prepare for lecture by reading the assigned sections from Chapter 10 in your textbook or ebook. This will provide an organizing framework for concepts introduced in lecture, and help you take better notes.
  2. Take the checkup quiz and work the Checkup questions in your textbook to assess your understanding of basic concepts. Take note of any topics you need to review further.
  3. Review the Examples from your textbook. These progress from simple to complex, and provide concrete illustrations of the concepts discussed.
  4. Review the Problem Solving Techniques boxes on Conservation of Momentum and on Center of Mass from your textbook.

Learn

  1. Re-read Chapter 10 and review your lecture notes.
  2. Use the FlashCards to test your memory for new key terms and equations.
  3. Work the end of chapter Problems and Review Problems assigned by your instructor. If your instructor has assigned SmartWork online homework, login from the right navigation pane.
