"The sonatas of Mozart are unique; they are too easy for children, and too difficult for artists." —ARTUR SCHNABEL

Key Points

  • Classical sonatas were set either for one solo instrument (the fortepiano, an early piano) or for duos (violin and piano, for example).
  • Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven all wrote music influenced by the Turkish Janissary, or military, band (CP 10), including the lively Rondo alla turca from Mozart's Sonata in A major, K. 331.
  • The Moonlight Sonata, Beethoven's best-known piano work, evokes the new Romantic style.
