In the liner notes to the City Life CD (which includes Proverb), Steve Reich
explains that he began the process of composing this piece by looking at the works of Perotin, a
prominent twelfth-century composer of monophonic chant and organum (an early form of twopart
counterpoint). The text, he says: "comes from a collection of Wittgenstein's writings entitled
Culture and Value. . . . This particular text was written in 1946."
