In the liner notes to the City Life CD (which includes Proverb), Steve Reich explains that he began the process of composing this piece by looking at the works of Perotin, a prominent twelfth-century composer of monophonic chant and organum (an early form of twopart counterpoint). The text, he says: "comes from a collection of Wittgenstein's writings entitled Culture and Value. . . . This particular text was written in 1946."
