John Brown
Overview How did John Brown's raid contribute to the coming of the Civil War?
In October 1859 John Brown, a fervent abolitionist, led a group of men who captured a federal arsenal in Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Brown hoped his action would inspire slaves throughout the South to rise up in rebellion. Federal troops recaptured the arsenal, and a court convicted Brown to death for treason. The brief speech Brown gave to the court inspired northerners and outraged southerners.
