This poster proclaimed "outrage" that an abolition speaker was coming to town and urged citizens to peacefully disrupt the lecture. Abolitionists faced mortal peril in the South and nearly as extreme harassment and attacks in many northern cities as well. As you examine the poster, consider how the author claimed to be on the side of freedom, states' rights, and the union. Why were abolitionists accused of being a threat to those values and institutions? What might an abolitionist have argued in response to that accusation? What local or federal institutions might have intervened in this location to protect the abolitionist from an angry crowd?
