The Pueblo Revolt
Overview What motivated the Pueblo Indians to revolt against the Spanish in New Mexico in 1680?
The Pueblo Revolt was the most successful Indian revolt against European colonists in North America. In a carefully coordinated attack, Pueblos throughout New Mexico attacked the Spanish in August, 1680. The Indians killed some 400 colonists and drove the remaining 2,000 or so out of New Mexico. The Pueblo victory was short-lived, however, and the Spanish returned to New Mexico in the 1690s.
