Scott McCloud (b. 1960)
American cartoonist and comics theorist. McCloud was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and earned a B.F.A. in illustration at Syracuse University. The creator of the science fiction/superhero comic book series Zot!, McCloud has also done the artwork for many issues of Superman as well as his own Destroy!!, which he describes as “a deliberately over-the-top, oversized single-issue comic book, intended as a parody of formulaic superhero fights,” and the graphic novel The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln (1998). In 1993, he published Understanding Comics, a scholarly work on the definition, history, and methodology of comics, done entirely in comics form. He followed this study with Reinventing Comics (2000) and Making Comics (2006). See also scottmcloud.com.
