E. B. White (1899–1985)
American poet, journalist, editor, and essayist. Elwyn Brooks White was born in Mount Vernon, New York. Just three years after graduating from Cornell University in 1921, he began a sixty-year career on the staff of the New Yorker, contributing poems and articles and serving as a discreet and helpful editor. Among his many books, three written for children earned him lasting fame: Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte’s Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). Renowned for his graceful prose, White revised and edited William Strunk’s text The Elements of Style (1919, 1959), a classic guide to writing still widely known as “Strunk and White.” The collected Essays of E. B. White was published in 1977; a year later White was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for a lifetime of literary achievement. See also kirjasto.sci.fi/ebwhite.htm.
