Sojourner Truth (c. 1797–1883)
Activist. Sojourner Truth is the name assumed by Isabella Baumfree, who was born into slavery in Hurley, New York. A tall and imposing figure with a deep voice whose first language was Dutch, Truth was legally freed in 1827. Though unable to read or write, she became a celebrated abolitionist and campaigner for women’s rights.
