David Brooks (b. 1961)

Canadian-born essayist and news commentator. Brooks was born in Toronto, grew up in New York City, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1983 with a degree in history. Presently a columnist for the New York Times and commentator on PBS NewsHour, he was previously a writer and editor for the Wall Street Journal and then the senior editor of the neo-conservative Weekly Standard. Brooks is the author of Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There (2000) and On Paradise Drive: How We Live Now (and Always Have) in the Future Tense (2004). Brooks himself reports that he was politically liberal before “coming to my senses” as a young man; since then he has frequently broken with fellow conservatives by espousing moderate views on social issues.
