Barack Obama (b. 1961)

American author, politician, and forty-fourth president of the United States. Born in Honolulu to an American mother and a Kenyan father, Obama grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia before earning degrees at Columbia University and the Harvard Law School. He worked as a community organizer in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. Before his election to the U.S. presidency, he served in the Illinois State Senate and the U.S. Senate. Obama is the author of two books: his memoir, Dreams from My Father (1995), and a political manifesto, The Audacity of Hope (2006). His keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention catapulted him to national attention; his speech at Cairo University, soon after his inauguration, marked a “new beginning” in U.S. relations with the rest of the world. In 2009 Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. See also whitehouse.gov/about/presidents.
