The writer of these sample documents first wrote an brief article for a neighborhood newspaper. After seeing the article in print, she decided that a brochure would convey her message more effectively. Her computer offered many different design options--the ability to add scanned photos, create columns, and so on--and she kept her readers and purpose in mind as she made her design choices. If she had chosen another genre--a poster of a Web site, for example--her design options would have been different. Adapted from Picturing Texts.
