Jack Hitt (b. 1957)

American journalist and radio commentator. Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Hitt got his start by contributing to and editing his elementary school’s literary magazine. Now his feature articles appear in such publications as Rolling Stone, GQ, Wired, Harper’s, and the New York Times Magazine, where he writes about everything from amateur space travel to endangered languages. Hitt is probably best known for his contributions to the National Public Radio program This American Life, which has featured his stories about growing up with a transgendered woman, a production of Hamlet put on by the inmates of a maximum-security prison, and many other subjects. The author of Off the Road: A Modern-Day Walk Down the Pilgrim’s Route into Spain (1994), Hitt has also edited The Harper’s Forum Book: What Are We Talking About? (1991).
