Henry L. Roediger III (b. 1947)

Professor of psychology at Washington University in St. Louis. Roediger is a specialist in memory and human learning, and the author or coauthor of many articles and psychology textbooks. What caused him to specialize in the psychology of memory? Roediger attributes his choice to an event in his childhood—the death of his mother when he was five years old. “That event changed my life drastically,” says Roediger. “I was determined to hold on to my memories of her, to relive the past by remembering them. At a very early age, I spent a lot of time thinking about memory and how it works.”
