Study Questions 1. Define the vertebrate phylotypic stage, and compare the ways birds and mammals attain that stage.
2. Both insectivorous bats and insects possess wings for flight. Some common regulatory circuits might be involved in the development of these two structures. Suggest experimental approaches to evaluate that hypothesis.
3. Cephalochordate lancelets do not posses a neural crest. Speculate on how peripheral nerves might arise in such a creature. Propose an experiment to test your idea.
