Study Plan

Learning Goals

By the conclusion of this chapter, you should be able to:
  1. Identify the structures in the universe that have larger scales than individual galaxies have.
  2. Describe how astronomers use observations, theory, and simulations on supercomputers to connect the formation of structure following the Big Bang with the large-scale structure of our universe today.
  3. Discuss the formation of the first stars and the first galaxies.
  4. Summarize the observations, models, and experiments that provide supporting evidence for the existence of dark matter.
  5. Explain how observations of galaxies at many different redshifts contribute to understanding the evolution of the large-scale structure of the universe.
