Single-payer really IS cheaper.

It doesn't include the bureaucratic overhead of insurance-based systems. Insurance imposes huge hassles on both doctors and patients. Single-payer eliminates them at a stroke. It doesn't eliminate ALL bureaucracy, of course, but an awful lot.

One of the big arguments in the current debate is "you'll put the insurance companies out of business." Yeah, and public fire departments put private fire departments out of business, and public police services put private thief-takers out of business too. Cry me a river.
