The college English textbook department (college literature anthologies, philosophy textbooks, film textbooks, & Norton Critical Edition series) is seeking a summer intern to assist with various editorial projects. Summer Intern: Music

Part-time. The intern will assist the music editorial team in the publication of a substantial list of text and trade books, provide information to professors and college bookstores regarding Norton’s music publications, procure music, photo, and text permissions, assist in market research, assist in the writing of copy, and perform various clerical tasks as required. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and interpersonal skills, a solid background in music including the ability to read music, excellent command of spoken and written English, and the ability to balance a multitude of projects at one time. Please note that this is a part-time internship for someone who is interested in a publishing career.

Summer Intern: Advertising

Seeking an intern to support both design and production of college ads, summer 2009. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Organize and maintain the college book cover archive
  • Organize and maintain the ad archive
  • Prepare files to send to the printer
  • Create mock-ups of brochures, postcards, etc
  • Organize and maintain postcards/brochures in advertising closet
  • Assist in gathering copy for space ads
  • Enter convention booklists into Quickview system
  • Assist in compiling and preparing final memos to Editors for conventions
  • Various clerical tasks (copying, mailings, etc.).

The ideal candidate is organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and proactive, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. Facility with MSWord required. College Editorial Intern: Science

The College Science department is seeking a summer intern to assist with various editorial projects. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented and organized with an interest in BOTH the editorial and marketing processes of textbook publishing. Duties may include assisting with manuscript preparation, clearing reprint permissions, researching market data, correspondence, and day-to-day office activities. Subject areas include but are not limited to chemistry, physics, astronomy. A science background is not required but a strong interest in science is encouraged. Schedules are flexible, but a commitment of at least 15 hours per week is preferred.

Trade Department

Production Department Internship

The Production Department at W. W. Norton & Company is seeking an intern for summer 2009. Qualified candidates will be highly motivated with strong communication skills, the ability to manage several projects at the same time, and, most importantly, a demonstrated interest in publishing.

The production intern will gain exposure to all facets of book and Ebook production for both trade and college text books, including copyediting, art and design, in-house composition, budget estimating, paper selection, and book manufacturing. In addition, all interns participate in a brown bag lunch program with department heads throughout the company.

Publicity Department Internships

The Trade Publicity Department at W. W. Norton & Company seeks bright, energetic, and detail-oriented individuals with superior writing and oral communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills, to participate in our internship program. Interns will assist in various projects, from basic office tasks like filing and photocopying clips to assisting publicists with mailings, review chasing, assembling press kits, writing and editing pitch letters, making follow-up calls, and keeping our database up-to-date by researching media contacts. The ideal candidate will be someone who loves reading and is interested in learning more about book publishing. He or she must be able to prioritize, multitask, and work independently and efficiently. Knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel and an excellent phone manner are also helpful.

All Norton interns are paid $10 a day, and schedules are flexible. We require a commitment of two to three days per week.

Editorial Department Internships

The trade department at Norton publishes nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Recent titles include Fareed Zakaria’s The Post-American World, Paul Krugman's The Conscience of a Liberal, Globalization and Its Discontents by Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz, Irvine Welsh's Porno, The Selected Stories of Patricia Highsmith, Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm, The Collected Poems by former Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz, Stephen Greenblatt's Will in the World, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond.

Interns in the trade editorial department are asked to do everything from read manuscripts and proposals to write reader's reports, obtain permissions for forthcoming books, work on catalog and jacket copy, attend editorial meetings, and perform basic office tasks like filing and copying. In general, their job is to help the editorial assistants move projects along from the manuscript stage all the way to the bookstore. Qualified candidates are bright, detail-oriented, and responsible students who enjoy reading, write well, and, most importantly, want to learn about book publishing.

All Norton interns receive a $10 per day stipend. Schedules are flexible, although we do require a minimum commitment of two to three days per week. Rights & Contracts Intern

The contracts, rights, and production departments of W. W. Norton & Company seek interns to help with administrative tasks and learn the business and legal foundations of book publishing.

Work includes researching rights queries, filing and organizational work including work on production spreadsheets and contract reports, and special projects such as researching the status of electronic rights to older books.

Candidates should be interested in learning about the business side of book publishing, including standard publishing contract terms, the place of rights sales and licensing deals such as audio, book club, and e-book arrangements in publishing strategies, the role of literary agents, and the manufacturing of books. This is not an editorial position.

Schedule flexible (minimum commitment of two days a week preferred), internship unpaid with a stipend of $10/day worked to help defray expenses.

International Sales Department Intern

The international sales department of W. W. Norton & Company is seeking an intern for summer 2009 to assist with administrative tasks and day-to-day office activities.

Duties include correspondence with overseas bookstores and sales representatives, organizing and tracking the distribution of sales materials, researching price and availablity queries, tracking book production and related marketing information, database maintenance, and clerical support. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and has excellent communications skills, the ability to priorititize and work independently in an office environment, and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

This position is a great opportunity to learn about the business and marketing aspects of book publishing and export sales. This is not an editorial position.

Norton Professional Books

Internship Positions

Norton Professional Books is a small but busy division within Norton (see our website at www.wwnorton.com/npb) that publishes books in two categories: books for psychotherapists and other mental health professionals; and books for architects and designers. Our books are intended mainly for professionals but do also have some cross-over appeal for general consumers.

We are looking for interns to help principally with marketing and publicity work for our books, and to do some editorial work on an as-needed basis. Duties will vary but are likely to include: mailings, data entry, updating marketing files, proofreading catalogs and publicity materials, researching media contacts and events related to our books. Interns will have an opportunity to work closely with everyone in our division. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and have an interest in learning about all aspects of book publishing. Related experience is helpful but not required.

Schedule flexible, but minimum requested commitment is two days a week. Internship is unpaid with a stipend of $10 a day per day of work.
